Until recently cosmetic surgery was largely seen as an option for women. The idea of men having surgery for cosmetic reasons would have been largely mocked in society. However, in recent years there has been a vast increase in the number of men undergoing cosmetic procedures. In this post we will try to take a look at the various types of treatment men are having and explore the reasons behind the boom.
Male Cosmetic Procedures
The most popular cosmetic procedure for British men to undergo is Rhinoplasty or as they are more commonly referred to “nose jobs”. Perhaps more surprisingly, the next on the list is breast reduction surgery. Indeed, the number of men in the US undergoing this treatment accounts for over 30% of all male cosmetic procedures performed in 2010. Also on the rise is liposuction and this procedure looks set to increase even more in popularity with the invention of laser liposuction, an innovative body sculpting treatment. In this treatment a cold laser conductor is passed over the targeted part of the body, this laser drains fat cells and the body then naturally removes the resulting waste. The whole procedure and non-invasive and, therefore, entirely pain free. Patients do not need any time to recover and can return to their normal way of life straight away.
Why the Boom?
In today’s society men are under much more pressure to look good and take more pride in their appearance. It is no longer just women who are scrutinised for how they look on a daily basis. The rise in breast reduction surgery can largely be attributed to the attention man boobs or “moobs” are now given. Cosmetic surgery as a whole has also become more acceptable and there is less of a stigma attached to it than there was 10 years ago. The rise of the metrosexual is another explanation for the boom. There has been a significant increase in young, vain men who are happy, and unashamed, to take pride in their appearance and go to significant lengths to improve their looks whilst paying a hefty price to do so.
The Cult of Celebrity
We live in a celebrity obsessed society and we have a tendency to follow celebrity behaviour and trends. There are several well-known men who have been completely open about the cosmetic procedures they have undergone. Simon Cowell openly admits to having regular Botox injections and even British soccer player Wayne Rooney, with his hard man image, admitted in 2011 to having a hair transplant to combat his baldness. If celebrities are open about the treatments and men, young men in particular, look up to these people then it makes sense many will see no harm in going under the knife themselves.
The rise in the number of men undergoing cosmetic procedures in the UK can be attributed to society’s obsession with appearance and its general acceptance of plastic surgery. Society has produced the young, vain metrosexual man who is happy to undergo surgery to improve his image. The fact male celebrities are openly discussing the surgery they have also encourages men to have treatment. With the invention of painless procedures, such as laser liposuction, the boom in male cosmetic surgery looks set to continue for years to come.
