What The Future Holds For Weight Loss

Since time immemorial, people have been (and still are, in fact), obsessed with their body mass. Most are seeking for effective ways to reduce their weight, some are looking to add to it, although there seems to be more people obsessed with the former than the latter, what with the kind of lifestyle that we have.

That point being said, we will focus primarily on weight loss. There’s a whole thriving industry dealing with our weight issues, promising methods that are fast, easy, safe, lasting and all those wonderful adjectives you can come up with associated with our body weight. Drugs are constantly being developed (whether they are cooked up to burn fat, target the brain, increase energy expenditure, or block fat-cell formation) that people are pouncing on once it hits the market, hoping that this new drug might be IT, the solution to the ever-daunting problem of weigh reduction. Needless to say, the future of weight loss is a hopeful prospect for many of us.

Although since we all react differently to different drugs, it is unlikely that the industry would come up with a one-size-fits-all solution for this. Besides, the human bodily functions are so complex (in this particular case, the metabolism and appetite regulation) that scientists are finding it next to impossible to come up with an effective drug that will cure, and this has to be said, obesity.

This affliction is fast-becoming a grave concern for health authorities the world over, making the future of weight loss a rather bleak one if one looks at the statistics. As mentioned, we have such a fast-paced lifestyle now that it is often easy to eat extra calories too many (especially during supper, the main reason being that most of us tend to skip breakfast (and/or lunch) just to keep up with the frenzied hurly-burly of today’s life.

Recently, there has been a flurry of optimism in the industry with the experimental weight-loss drug called Contrave and with the Food and Drug Administration re-reviewing the over-the-counter drug Orlistat, also known as Alli and Xenical. What comes of it remains to be seen, as Contrave still has to be approved by the FDA and the same agency has yet to reach a conclusive decision about the fate of Orlistat.

As such, it still boils down to the good old approach: proper nutrition. No matter what “wonder drug” for weight loss might come out in the future, nothing beats good nutrition AND proper exercise to realize your weight loss goals. Of course, supplements to help one reach that goal wouldn’t hurt, as long as it’s approved by the FDA. AND your doctor.
